Symptoms of Cooling System Failure You Need to Know
Shortly after you start your car or truck the engine temperature skyrockets. If it were left unregulated it would quickly cause the engine to quite literally melt itself. Early automotive engineers understood this, which is why a cooling system was developed for vehicles long before the comforts of power steering, radios or even electric starters. The cooling system, which consists mainly of a radiator, thermostat, water pump and a series of hoses that connect these parts to internal engine passageways of which cooling fluid called coolant runs through. If any of these parts malfunction it could spell disaster for the vehicle's engine. If you notice any of these signs of cooling system get in touch with you local auto repair shop right away.
Rising Temperature Gauge
Perhaps the first sign of trouble that you will encounter is a rising dashboard temperature gauge. If you notice the needle pointing to the red zone as you cruise down the street be sure to pull over as soon as possible to avoid overheating, which may lead to major engine damage. Get in touch with your mechanic for further instruction on how to transport your vehicle: tow or drive.
Another common sign of cooling system trouble means that your vehicle is currently overheating. White steam escaping from under the hood means pull over immediately. If you do not stop your vehicle soon it could lead to a blown head gasket or even something as serious as a cracked engine block.
Low Coolant Levels
On occasion be sure to check all of the fluid levels in your vehicle, including the coolant. If it is found that the coolant is low a few things may be happening. There could be an actual leak of the fluid or it may be being burnt up inside the engine. If the latter is the case you would certainly run into the next problem.
White Exhaust Smoke
White exhaust, generally in the form of puffy clouds, is a strong indication that coolant is being burnt up in the combustion chamber. An internal coolant leak could mean that there is serious damage already done, which may require an engine rebuild.
If you spot bright green, sweet smelling liquid in your driveway or wherever you park your car you have just discovered a coolant leak. Call your mechanic ASAP to make an appointment for repair.
