What are the Most Common Signs of Transmission Trouble?

What are the Most Common Signs of Transmission Trouble?Your car is made up of numerous systems that work together in order to get you from point A to point B. While it is the engine that creates the power that moves the vehicle, it is the transmission which transfers that power to the wheels in order to actually make them spin. Should your car suffer transmission failure you could very well end up stranded on the side of the road. If you notice any of the following signs of transmission trouble don't hesitate to get to a quality auto repair shop for diagnostics and service.

Grinding Noises

One of the more common early signs of transmission trouble is a grinding or squealing noise that occurs while the transmission shifts. This can happen with both automatic and manual transmissions. Shifting should always be smooth and silent, so any strange noises deserve to be checked out.

Delayed Shifting

When you shift from park to drive or as the automatic transmission shifts between forward gears on its own there should not be a spike in RPMs from the engine. If there is it means the transmission is not engaging as quickly as it should, which is likely due to low levels of transmission fluid.

Pops out of Gear

One of the more dangerous signs of manual transmission trouble is if the gear shifter suddenly pops out of gear into neutral. This prevents you from being able to properly control your car so be sure to get to a repair shop before this problem causes an accident.

Can't Shift into Gear

An obvious symptom of transmission trouble is if you can't shift your car into gear at all. This can happen in both manual and automatic transmissions. More often than not you will need more serious repairs at this point.

Transmission Fluid Leak

Transmission fluid is usually dyed a reddish color to help differentiate it from other automotive fluids. Should you find a puddle of red fluid where you normally park your car you'll want to visit a transmission repair center ASAP. Low levels of transmission fluid can cause any number of problems, including most of the above.
