Common Signs of Engine Trouble
When you first suspect that engine trouble is brewing, you'll want to get to the shop for an inspection. By being proactive, you'll have the best chance to nip the problem in the bud and save yourself from needing extremely expensive repairs. At The Organic Mechanic, our local auto shop uses computerized diagnostic equipment that allows us to accurately pinpoint engine trouble. Then we can get right to work on expertly fixing the problem.
The Check Engine Light Illuminates
When the check engine light illuminates, it doesn't always mean that an engine disaster is near. Nevertheless, it's smart to get to the shop for diagnostics so the problem can be identified before it escalates. Common issues that trigger the check engine light include faulty catalytic converters, oxygen sensors, and mass airflow sensors.
Common Symptoms of an Engine Problem
If you hear unfamiliar sounds coming from your engine, then you don't want to ignore them. Various engine problems can cause a knocking sound. One possible cause of a knock is that you have bad rod bearings. A knocking noise can also be caused by a lean air/fuel mixture. You may hear a tapping sound if you're driving with extremely low oil. The noise may arise due to inadequate lubrication, which can lead to major damage to your engine's moving parts. Whenever you hear knocking/tapping sounds, it's best to bring them to a mechanic's attention.
An engine issue can also cause power loss. If your vehicle is old and has a ton of miles, then it's not necessarily cause for concern if engine power has mildly diminished over time. But if your engine abruptly loses a lot of power, then you may have worn-out pistons or another serious issue.
Discolored exhaust smoke is another sign of engine trouble, with the smoke's color providing clues about the underlying issue. Black smoke is a symptom of too much fuel burning up. Blue-tinged smoke is a sign of an oil leak. White smoke suggests that coolant is leaking internally. With white exhaust smoke, you could be dealing with a blown head gasket.
