Simple Auto Service for Increased MPGs
If you want your car to stay healthy it is important to pay attention to any signs it's giving you that it may need repair. Signs that auto repair is necessary can come in many forms, including smells, visual clues, noises, vibrations and so on. Of course, a decrease in fuel efficiency without a change in driving habits is also a sign that something is amiss, but the cause can be hard to detect. Providing your car with the regular maintenance it needs will help ensure that you're getting optimal MPGs while keeping your car happy and healthy. If you notice a drop in MPGs be sure to conduct these vehicle maintenance services!
Check your Tires
Tires that are not properly inflated can cause control and braking issues and decrease your fuel efficiency by 2 miles per gallon or more. Tires should also be inspected for cracking or bubbling rubber and bad tread wear. These are all signs it may be time for new tires.
Change the Oil
Oil keeps everything running smooth inside your engine. Fresh oil keeps things properly lubricated, helping to prevent metal on metal friction. After lots of summer cruising, your car is likely due for an oil and filter change. An engine that has fresh oil doesn't have to work as hard and burns less fuel.
Replace the Air Filter
If your air filter is clogged it means your car is going to burn more gas than necessary because there isn't enough air being allowed to mix with the gas. There is a specific mixture of air and fuel that must be burned for optimal performance, and decreased air flow means your car will compensate by burning additional gasoline, resulting in lowered MPGs and other problems.
Inspect the Fuel Filter
Generally fuel filters only need to be changed every 2 years/24,000 miles but it is important to have your mechanic inspect it regularly to make sure it isn't clogged. Making sure that it isn't dirty and is allowing fuel to freely pass through so your fuel pump isn't overworked and that the gasoline getting to the engine is clean. A clean filter will help maintain higher MPGs.
