Top Signs of Engine Trouble
The engine can easily be thought of as the heart of your car. It's pistons pump to create power, much like a heart pumps to move oxygen and blood through the body, giving power to the being. If your heart seemed to be giving you trouble you'd certainly visit the doctor, so if your car's heart experiences any of the following signs it is time for engine repair don't hesitate to head to your local auto shop.
Metal Flakes in the Oil
When having oil changes completed on your vehicle be sure that the technician is inspecting the old oil. If metal flakes are found in the oil removed from your vehicle it likely indicates excessive friction is occurring between the moving parts of the motor. This can be due to insufficient oil levels or because of general wear and tear. In either case, further diagnostics are necessary.
Does your vehicle seem to be getting poor fuel economy? Is it hard to start your vehicle? Is acceleration and idling troublesome for your car or truck? These are all general signs of decreased performance. While this could be due to major engine trouble it is much more likely a minor issue needs repair, such as a replacing the spark plugs or installing a new fuel filter.
Increased Exhaust Smoke
If your vehicle is creating excessive amounts of exhaust smoke it is important that you visit the auto shop as soon as possible. Depending on the color of the smoke you can often tell what type of trouble is present. Blue smoke indicates burning oil, black smoke means too much fuel is being used and white smoke is a sign of a coolant leak.
A repetitive knocking noise that rises and falls with engine RPMs can often be attributed to worn engine bearings. These bearings support the motion of the moving engine parts, which means if they fail they engine could seize.
Check Engine Light
An obvious sign of a problem under the hood is if the check engine light comes on. This light usually represents relatively small issues, such as a failed sensor, but if that sensor is not replaced it could lead to bigger problems, like a failed catalytic converter. Always visit your local shop for diagnostics as soon as the light comes on.
