What are common symptoms of transmission trouble?

Transmission issues are notorious for quickly escalating and becoming very costly to fix. For this reason, it's always best to get to the shop when you first notice an indication of a problem. By being proactive, there's a much better chance that the mechanic will be able to address the issue before it badly worsens. At The Organic Mechanic, our local mechanics are experts at diagnosing transmission issues. Once we accurately pinpoint the problem, we'll get right to work on thoroughly repairing it so you can get back behind the wheel in as little time as possible.

Signs of a Transmission Problem

A classic symptom of transmission trouble is that your car fails to go into/stay in certain gears. If your car is suddenly popping out of gear, it creates a safety hazard because you don't have total control over the operation of your vehicle. This could be happening because of a transmission fluid-related problem. In some cases, a transmission flush will remedy this issue, but there's also a chance that your transmission will need more complex work.

It's a good idea to check transmission fluid on a monthly basis. Typically, transmission fluid should be checked while the engine is still running. This is because transmission fluid is known to contract as it cools down, which can give you the wrong impression of how much fluid you're actually driving with. If the dipstick shows that your transmission fluid is concerningly low, then you may be dealing with a leak. You may also have evidence of a transmission fluid leak if a reddish-colored fluid is accumulating on the pavement where you regularly park. Transmission fluid leaks should always be addressed ASAP so that major problems don't develop. Also, if you check your transmission fluid and it looks or smells burnt, then you'll want to bring this to the mechanic's attention so that the underlying problem can be identified.

With a manual transmission, there are certain signs of trouble to watch out for. If you struggle to put your stick shift into gear, then you could be dealing with a clutch master cylinder problem. Grinding in a manual transmission is a symptom of clutch failure, though you may just need a clutch adjustment. There could also be clutch trouble if your clutch pedal feels sticky or spongey.
